My Story

Hey there! Welcome to Hope and Homeownership. It is so nice to “meet” you! My name is Melissa and I founded Hope and Homeownership LLC in 2023 with little more than a name and a desire to inspire others. In 2025, I made a leap of faith and transformed Hope and Homeownership into the mortgage company it is today. Drawing from my own life experience, my hope is to show others that it is possible for them to overcome barriers and build their dreams, including buying a home.

My ability to live my own dreams today is possible for everyone, but for me, it did not come easy. Education, community support, and knowledge are the key pillars that form the foundation for my story. I have dubbed this idea, Hope and Homeownership.

My life did not begin with privilege, a guaranteed education, or even a place to truly call home. I did have resourcefulness on my side, and I used that to overcome odds that were stacked against me and became a first-generation college graduate. Graduating college was crucial for my journey because I knew that education was the one thing that would change my life. To this day, I remain a passionate advocate for education for anyone who wants it and seek to connect those people with the resources they need to make it possible. Education gave me hope for a better future.

Homeownership has always represented stability in my mind. As a child, my family moved frequently from one apartment to another. I attended three elementary schools, three middle schools, and eventually dropped out of high school in 9th grade. Every time I has to start over at a new school, I dreaded the awkwardness of being the new kid, and I always felt like an outsider as I worked to establish new friendships. I longed for the deep friendships that the kids around me had. The experience of never truly having a place to call home, and its impact on the sense of community I lacked, always stuck with me. I dreamed of one day raising my children in a home of our very own so they would have the stability I’d always craved, and be given a chance to forge deep, meaningful life-long friendships.

The dream of having children arrived earlier than expected for me. I became a parent at age 14, but I wouldn’t become a homeowner until much later. By age 17, I became a single parent as a result of leaving an abusive relationship. Obviously my earning potential was limited, even though I was able to work summer jobs through the school district’s Job Training Partnership Act (JTPA) beginning when I was 14. Even at 17, the wages I was qualified for were not enough to support a family. I relied on public assistance to make ends meet, though I often felt ashamed that I needed to. I longed for self-sufficiency and knew that with education, I would be able to build a better life for my children than what I had, one they didn’t have to be ashamed of, and one with a home they could grow up in.

Even though I was determined to finish my college degree, I faced many barriers to even completing high school. Statistically, it is extremely rare for a young, single parent to finish college. I could have easily settled and given up on the life I dreamed of, but I believed in the vision enough to see it through. After I had my first child, I dropped out of high school to work. Yet, I knew this was not the end. I obtained my GED even before my high school classmates graduated, and from there I enrolled in community college.

My determination and stubborn edge told me that where there was a will, there was a way. I worked part-time jobs during college to make ends meet along with community and government resources such as childcare assistance, housing assistance and a federal Pell grant. It took me 7 years to get a 4-year degree, but I did it. At the age of 24, as a single mother of three children, I walked across the stage to receive my Bachelor of Science in Accounting.

My use of these assistance programs to attain self-sufficiency is a success story that has made me a willing taxpayer who is honored to now be able to give back to programs and communities that helped me get to where I am today. That is exactly why the programs exist, and I am proof that they work. This is why, in addition to advocating for education, I am also an advocate for programs that support young people and parents as they work to create a better life for themselves. It is my desire to share my story so that others can find the hope to achieve their dreams.

Five months after graduating college, I accomplished the most meaningful milestone that I’d dreamed of my entire life. I bought a home for me and my children. The home I found was a foreclosure that needed a lot of TLC to match my vision, but it was zoned to a great school, all of my kids had their own rooms, and, most importantly, it was our very own. I poured heart and hope into fixing it up and making it a place we were proud to call home. At last, my kids had a place to grow roots, and my inner child had the stable home she’d always pictured.

While I am a firm believer in the value of formal education, I’ve always had an entrepreneurial spirit. I later returned to college to obtain my MBA with a concentration in Finance, and while in graduate school, I designed, built out, and operated a private personal training studio. Later, I graduated with my MBA and took a job as a Plant Controller, but the entrepreneurial bug never went away. I had a small nest egg from selling our starter home, and I wanted to use it to make a small and steady return on my investment. At first, I thought of buying an investment property. However, I was not a mortgage lender yet and I lacked the experience and knowledge I have now to make that feasible. So, I found a bar for sale on the strand in Galveston, Texas instead. After some initial research, it appeared to be a decent business venture. Being always the optimist, I ignored some personal blind spots, including having no experience as a bartender much less a bar owner. That venture became a hands-on workshop for managing cash-flow and mitigating losses when it was time to sell. That venture left me with priceless experience that I could never have obtained in a classroom, and I now use my experiences as a business owner to help aspiring entrepreneurs, start-ups, and small businesses navigate finances for their own businesses.

Everything in my past has proven that success comes when you decide to do something, commit to putting in the effort against all odds, and remain willing to move ahead even when circumstances aren’t ideal or the picture is unclear. Living by these principles has blessed me to be my own boss and live a life I choose for myself each day, where I get to see people not only hope for their dreams, but attain them, whether it is to finish their education, increase their income, open a business, or qualify for a mortgage to buy a home.

I openly share my journey in hopes that I can encourage others to find a way to reach their own dreams, no matter the circumstance they are starting with. Someone had to believe in my dream before I could see it, and I am here to believe in your dream so you can not only see them but go on to live them. The right community and support system gives every human the power to create their life and to influence the lives of everyone they touch. Being any part of that legacy is an honor that I hold close to my heart every single day.

With hope always,
